Police arrest man after hourslong barricade standoff in Miramar

MIRAMAR, Fla. — Miramar police took a man into custody following an hourslong barricade situation that began Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Police identified the suspect as 27-year-old Styvens Jean. He is expected to be charged with aggravated assault and simple battery.

Authorities say the situation began at 1 p.m., when Miramar police were called to a home near that 7500 block of Juniper street. When officers arrived, they said the person involved retreated inside a residence while armed with a knife.

Investigators also confirmed that the subject was alone in the home.

Officers were seen on the ground huddled together, talking and possibly strategizing.

Sky 10 flew over the scene, where an officer was seen walking down the road with a gun. Armored vehicles were parked nearby, and yellow police tape was tied around a white fence and a tree to keep people back.

Neighbors, including families with children, said the situation was alarming.

“I’m just really shocked and surprised at the moment. I hope everybody’s OK,” said Rochaya Reid, who lives nearby. “I hope nobody got hurt in the situation and like to lock yourself inside with the gun you must be something serious going on.”

Police later confirmed Jean was taken into custody and the scene was cleared without further incident.
