PALMETTO BAY, Fla. — A man is facing DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges more than a year after a head-on crash on U.S. 1 in Palmetto Bay that left his wife dead.
Mohammad Reza Bayatzadeh, 67, of southwest Miami-Dade, turned himself in at the Florida Highway Patrol station in Sweetwater on Friday.
The crash happened just after midnight on March 11, 2024, near the Southwest 183rd Street intersection.
According to an FHP arrest report, vehicle data showed that Bayatzadeh was going 77 mph in a 45 mph zone when he lost control of his Nissan Maxima, crossed the median and hit a Ford Explorer head-on.
Troopers said Bayatzadeh’s 62-year-old wife, Sorour Khalvatyzadeh, was in the passenger seat.
Both were taken to Jackson South Medical Center, where doctors pronounced Khalvatyzadeh dead about 30 minutes after the wreck.
Toxicology results showed that Bayatzadeh had a blood alcohol content of more than 0.14%, nearly twice the legal limit, troopers said.
Court records show Bayatzadeh posted a $30,000 bond after his arrest; he’s scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 6.
