MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A 44-year-old convicted felon who has been in and out of prison since 2016 appeared in Miami-Dade County court on Wednesday to face more charges after a recent conviction over baby sea turtles in Miami Beach.
Daniel Ambrose’s most recent prison stay was for possession of cocaine with the intent to purchase or distribute on Sept. 6, 2022, in Miami-Dade, records show. The Florida Department of Corrections released him on Jan. 7, 2024.
Crimes while he was homeless earlier this year in Miami Beach could land him back in a Florida prison, records show.
Miami Beach police officers arrested him for battery and possession of drug paraphernalia on April 17, 2024, and for cocaine possession and possession of drug paraphernalia on May 5, records show.
Ambrose wasn’t arrested when he allegedly attacked a woman who reported she had been in an “on-and-off relationship” with him in Miami Beach, according to police.
The violence at about 9:50 p.m., on July 21, in the woman’s apartment, was so loud that a neighbor called 911, according to a Miami Beach police report.
Miami Beach police officers reported finding the woman with “blood throughout her head” and “multiple bruising and abrasions throughout her body,” records show.
On July 24, police officers on Lincoln Road found Ambrose sleeping on the floor, outside of Simons Sportswear at 217 Lincoln Road, in South Beach, according to a video the department released on X and a police arrest report.
Ambrose was hiding a steak knife and had two live baby loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings in a plastic container, according to the arrest report on July 24. The report did not mention that he was a suspect of domestic violence on July 21.
Miami-Dade court records show there was a temporary halt on the July 24 case on Monday after Ambrose was convicted of illegal possession of any marine turtle, hatchling, or parts thereof, a third-degree felony, and two misdemeanors for trespassing and providing a false name.
On Wednesday, prosecutors filed two new cases against Ambrose. One is a felony related to the domestic violence incident on July 21, and the other is a new misdemeanor related to his arrest on Tuesday, records show.
Inmate records show Miami-Dade correctional deputies booked Ambrose shortly before 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Miami Beach police officers re-arrested Ambrose shortly after 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday at TGK, according to an arrest report.
Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Christine Hernandez is presiding over the felony case for aggravated battery and battery related to the domestic violence case.
Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Stephanie Silver is presiding over the new misdemeanor case for disorderly intoxication.
