Events held across Broward County to mark 9/11 terror attacks

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Events are being held Thursday across Broward County to mark the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Every year, the Broward County Aviation Department holds a memorial service at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to remember and reflect on the attacks.

For the past 10 years, the aviation department has hosted the event and several speakers are expected at Thursday’s event.

Some artifacts that will be featured at the airport include a fragment of the World Trade Center’s south tower, an American flag and the helmet of a New York City firefighter who took part in the recovery effort.

The city of Miramar will also be honoring the lives lost during a remembrance ceremony at 8:15 a.m. at Miramar Regional Park.

“September 11th will forever remain a day of reflection and unity,” Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam said in a statement. “As we remember the lives lost on that tragic day, we also honor the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. Recognizing our local veterans reminds us that freedom comes at a price, and their sacrifices ensure that we never forget.”

A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. in front of Lauderhill Fire Station 57, followed by a memorial tower climb.

The City of Fort Lauderdale, in partnership with the Fort Lauderdale Fire and Safety Museum, will host a remembrance ceremony at 9 a.m., featuring a Presentation of Colors, the singing of the National Anthem, remarks from city leadership, a keynote address, and a 9/11 tribute with the ceremonial ringing of the bell, playing of TAPS, and a moment of silence.

Broward County Public Schools, meanwhile, is holding memorial ceremonies Thursday at Cooper City High School and Western High School at 9:30 a.m.

Several events also took place earlier this week.

On Wednesday, firefighters from Tamarac Fire Rescue went to the HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital for a 9/11 memorial stair climb event.

Firefighters climbed stairs in honor of the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice after the attacks.

This type of memorial event always happens at different cities across the county to remember the 343 firefighters who climbed the towers of the World Trade Center to save others.

Thursday marks the 24th anniversary of the terror attacks.

Local 10 News spoke to a Tamarac fire captain who said this very challenging task of climbing 110 flights of stairs is all done thinking about those heroes who responded that day.

Each one of the firefighters carried about 70 pounds of gear during the memorial event.

“There’s not much that we can do, but we figured in order to remember them, we’ll just suffer,” Capt. Alex Seaman said. “Just knowing that our brothers lost their lives to do something as courageous as they were doing, and then to do this with our current brothers is just -- there’s no other feeling like it. And you know, completing it the way we are going to complete it is just -- it’s gonna really bring us closer together.”
