During a bond court hearing, Roosevelt Joseph was in handcuffs and holding a clear plastic bag as he stood before Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer, who said he was accused of trying to kill a police officer on Sept. 6.

“He said he had stabbed a woman, so the officer arrived there, and then he charged at the officer with a knife, and the officer shot him. Obviously, he went to the hospital, and he is doing better because he is here today,” Glazer said while reading a police report in court.

Joseph was accused of lying when he called 911 and of wielding a knife when he charged at the NMB police officers who responded at about 9:40 a.m. on Sept. 6 at the 1600 block of 164th Street, records show.

“He looked like he wanted the encounter with the police officers,” North Miami Beach Police Chief Juan Pinillos said about Joseph after the police shooting.

Miami-Dade County court records show Joseph was arrested on Sept. 9, and prosecutors filed a case against him for two felonies, a misdemeanor, and a municipal ordinance for obstructing police officers.

Joseph faced felony charges of second-degree attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He also faced a charge of misuse of 911 emergency communications.

Joseph’s father, who did not want to be identified, told Local 10 News after the shooting on Sept. 6 that his son suffers from a mental health condition.

“These are serious charges,” Glazer said in court before granting the prosecution’s motion for pre-trial detention.

Corrections had booked Joseph at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center near Doral, records show. Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Jason Bloch was set to preside over the case.
