MIAMI — Two Florida universities are facing backlash after faculty members allegedly made inflammatory remarks on social media following the reported assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
The University of Miami confirmed it has fired an employee after social media comments surfaced in connection with Kirk’s death.
While the university did not name the individual, The Miami Hurricane, the student-run newspaper, identified the employee as Dr. Michelle Bravo, a neurologist at the university’s Miller School of Medicine.
According to the publication, Bravo’s post referenced Kirk’s support for Israel, mentioned children dying in Gaza, and ended with the phrase: “The chickens have come home to roost.”
In a statement, the University of Miami said: “Freedom of speech is a fundamental right. At the same time, expressions that condone or endorse violence or are incompatible with our policies and values are not acceptable.”
Following the incident, Bravo’s profile was removed from the university’s website.
Meanwhile, Florida Atlantic University confirmed a tenured faculty member has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
The university said it became aware of multiple social media posts regarding Kirk’s assassination. FAU’s statement did not name the faculty member or specify the content of the posts but said a formal review is underway.
