MIAMI — A man accused of pulling a handgun inside a Miami food store and making anti‑Venezuelan remarks before fleeing was arrested this past weekend, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred just before 8 a.m. Saturday at Stop and Shop Food and Deli, located at 49 NE Second Ave., when Gonzalo Gonzalez, 57, asked for a vape, went into a backpack and pulled out a black handgun that a store clerk believed was a Glock, according to an arrest report released by the Miami Police Department.
Surveillance video and statements from two clerks corroborated the account, the report stated.
Police said the clerk told them that Gonzalo racked the slide on the gun and the second clerk dropped to the floor in fear behind the counter.
Shortly after, Gonzalo left the store and walked northbound on Northeast Second Avenue, the report stated.
A be-on-the-lookout alert was issued and officers later located and detained Gonzalo after a clerk pointed officers to his location, according to the report.
Police said they recovered a black handgun and several gold and silver coins sealed in plastic from a backpack in Gonzalo’s possession.
While officers read Miranda rights to Gonzalo in Spanish, his arrest report states that he repeatedly interrupted and made a series of statements that included, “God is my lawyer and I’m King David.”
The report also states that Gonzalo said, “The officer who placed handcuffs is going to die. The officers that are involved in my arrest are going to die and their police vehicles will be engulfed in flames and all that will remain are their ashes.”
The report also quoted Gonzalo as saying he was “put into this world to kill Venezuelans because they are attacking and killing Cubans.”
Jail records show Gonzalez is facing one count each of improper exhibition/prejudiced use of a firearm or weapon and aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony.
As of Monday afternoon, he was being held on a $5,000 bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
