KEY WEST, Fla. — Oklahoma felon Edward James Guidry was considered an “armed and dangerous” wanted man in 2021 before he was caught in Texas and locked up back in the Sooner State after being convicted of, among other things, pointing a gun at someone while driving.
The 56-year-old is now in trouble in South Florida, less than a year after getting out of prison, after police said he committed the same crime while visiting Key West on Thursday evening.
According to an arrest report, two men went to the Key West Police Department to report that a man later identified as Guidry had threatened them with weapons outside of the Beachside Resort & Residences at 3841 N. Roosevelt Blvd.
The victims said that Guidry, of Elk City, Oklahoma, pulled out in front of them as Guidry drove out of the resort in a GMC Terrain, then, as they tried to go around him, “showed us a knife,” the report states.
“I was attempting to get my phone out to record when he revealed a gun,” one of the men said, according to the report. “When he noticed my phone, he put the gun away and gave us the middle finger. He then ended up two cars behind us and turned off before we could get a clear video.”
Police noted that there had been a concurrent report “of someone pulling a female from a hotel room at the Beachside” at knifepoint and video provided by the victims of Guidry “matched the description of the male subject from the Beachside.”
According to the report, officers found Guidry and his girlfriend near the SUV at Mallory Square and detained them.
“Guidry admitted to possessing a knife, claiming he had been using it to remove dirt from under his fingernails,” the report states. “He denied making threats toward anyone and also denied pointing a firearm.”
Police said a search revealed “a black BB-gun-style handgun, wrapped in a yellow microfiber cloth, inside the vehicle’s center console” and said Guidry’s girlfriend “witnessed (him) displaying the knife and firearm during this incident.”
It would seemingly not be out of character for Guidry, who was convicted of feloniously pointing a firearm and several other charges in Beckham County, Oklahoma court in 2022.
An Elk City radio station reporting on the 2021 search for Guidry reported that authorities alleged he “pointed a shotgun at a man in his truck with his 4-year-old foster son” on a rural county road in October 2020.
Oklahoma Department of Corrections records show he served a state prison sentence and was released in December 2024.
The KWPD report described Guidry as a “habitual violent felony offender” and officers arrested him on two counts each of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a weapon.
As of Friday morning, Guidry was being held with no listed bond in the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Key West jail facility, online records show.
