Breast cancer support group offers strength and sisterhood at Memorial Cancer Institute

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Once a month, Carol Burgan gathers a special group of women at Memorial Cancer Institute — patients, survivors and those newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Dressed in pink, they meet in person and virtually to share strength, stories and support.

“It’s incredible that I’m allowed to lead these ladies,” Burgan said. “Not just for an hour, but throughout their cancer treatment.”

Some are awaiting test results. Others are in active treatment. And many, like Chevay Hampton — diagnosed four years ago — are survivors giving back.

“With no family nearby, this group was what I needed,” Hampton said. “Even if we just sit in silence, it helps.”

Lily Mazurek beat cancer 30 years ago but recently faced a recurrence. Now, she finds comfort in talking with others who are just beginning their journey.

“It was more of a mental journey this time,” she said. “The women like to discuss everything — from treatments to doctors.”

Burgan said the group offers more than just conversation:

“Hope is guaranteed. Faith is guaranteed. Strength. They learn how to cope with the adversities of life.”

Together, these women prove that emotional healing is just as vital as physical treatment — and no one has to face breast cancer alone.
