FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 21-year-old father and a 22-year-old mother accused of child abuse in Lauderdale Lakes were held without bond on Friday in Pompano Beach.
Their child suffered “blunt force injuries” in different parts of his body -- including several bilateral rib fractures -- and burns to in and outside of his mouth, according to the police arrest reports.
Fort Lauderdale police officers arrested Tony Jennings and Jakita Gardner during a traffic stop involving an Uber driver on Thursday, near their home, records show.
Broward inmate records show Jennings, 21, was at the Paul Rein Detention Facility, and Gardner, 22, was at the North Broward Bureau.
Detectives estimate the abuse went on from March 20 to April 24. Jennings and Gardner were each facing charges of first-degree felony aggravated child abuse and second-degree felony child neglect with bodily harm, records show.
A judge denied them bond for the child abuse charge and set the bond for the child neglect charge at $100,000, records show. Broward County Circuit Judge Michael I. Rothschild was set to preside over the cases.
