Firefighters use a new type of extinguisher to deal with EV and lithium battery fires

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Firefighters in Hollywood are using Cold Cut Cobra, a cutting extinguisher that deals with EV and lithium battery fires.

The Cold Cut Cobra combines an iron mixture with water to create an abrasive power punch that punctures holes into the large battery boxes.

”It’s just a growing number of EV cars and those hazards on the roadway, so we have to have a way to combat that," David Guernsey, a battalion chief with Hollywood Fire Rescue, said.

Florida is second in the country, after California, for having the most EV registrations.

″Because they are encased in the battery boxes, if we don’t penetrate that, we can’t stop the chain reaction, because it does produce its own oxygen and toxic gases," Guernsey said, adding, “With all the new high rises, buildings, and charging stations going up, we have to have a way to deal with that.“
