LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. — An 18-year-old woman appeared in court on Tuesday to face a charge of possession of a weapon on school property in Lauderdale Lakes, while she had a pending case for the same alleged crime.
Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Jada Burrows, a student, on Monday, and she appeared in bond court on Tuesday before Broward County Circuit Judge Carol-Lisa Phillips.
“She has a pending charge in the juvenile division from March of last year for the same exact charge,” Phillips said in court, later adding the weapon was found at the same school as the first incident.
A spokesperson for the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wednesday that the school in question is Boyd Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes.
According to BSO, deputies were notified at about 1:23 p.m. Monday that a pocket knife had been found in Burrows’ bookbag after she and two other students were found hiding in a bathroom on campus.
Phillips ordered Burrows, who turned 18 in January, to stay away from the school and from weapons, firearms, and ammunition.
“That’s obviously a huge safety concern,” Phillips said about the pending case that also included a juvenile charge for intimidation, writing, or sending written threats to kill.
Records show Burrows was booked at the Broward County Main Jail on Monday in Fort Lauderdale and remained there on Tuesday when prosecutors filed the new third-degree felony case.
Phillips set Burrows’s bond at $2,500. Broward County Circuit Judge Thomas J. Coleman is set to preside over the new case, records show.
