Fugitive caught in San Diego after evading capture for over 13 years for murder is behind bars in Miami-Dade

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — After a birthday party, witnesses told detectives that they saw a couple fighting outside when the man pushed the woman and shot her in the head on Sept. 23, 2012, in Miami Gardens, records show.

Ramone Clayton fled, and his wife, Stephanie Clayton, later died at the hospital, according to police. She was 35. Prosecutors filed a case against him on Sept. 25, 2012, and a judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

Clayton evaded arrest for more than 13 years.

On Oct. 24, detectives with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that Ramone Clayton, who was born in Jamaica, was living in the area. Three days later, deputies arrested him.

Clayton, 41, was extradited and arrested at 10 p.m. on Wednesday at Miami International Airport, according to a deputy’s arrest report.

Inmate records show correctional deputies booked him shortly after 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Clayton appeared in court on Thursday afternoon before Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer. He faced two charges: Second-degree murder with a deadly weapon and display of a firearm while committing a felony, also a second-degree felony.

Glazer denied him bond for the murder charge and set his bond for the weapon charge at $7,500. Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Richard Hersch was set to preside over the case.
