“Today is a sad day. We lost a hero and especially such a young officer,” Craig McQueen, retired assistant chief of the Miami Police Department, said while speaking to Local 10 News.

Two memorial services were held Tuesday for the 27-year-old deputy.

A private service for family and close friends took place at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, followed by a public ceremony at loanDepot Park.

Law enforcement officers and mourners stood at attention as Jaramillo’s casket, draped in an American flag, was carried by the honor guard.

McQueen described the role of the honor guard in such ceremonies.

“Basically, the honor guard brings honor with every step. That was our motto and that was what we strived on. That uniform that you see with the honor guard is totally different from the normal uniform, and those officers have to present that, so every step of the way, every place his body moves, it will be accompanied by an honor guard member,” said McQueen. “So it starts from the ME’s (medical examiner’s) office, then it goes to the funeral home, and then it starts the service.”

During the public ceremony, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Detective and Public Information Officer Argemis Colome said, “Today we gather with hearts that are broken, yet filled with gratitude. Gratitude for a life defined by courage, kindness and a commitment to service that never wavered.”

Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said Jaramillo was “brutally attacked” after responding to the crash in the Three Lakes neighborhood on Nov. 7.

After the final memorial service, the procession concluded at a cemetery near Kendall, where the deputy is set to be laid to rest.

All donations for Jaramillo’s family are being handled through the Police Officers Assistance Trust (POAT), a trusted nonprofit that ensures 100% of the proceeds go directly to the family.
