Human trafficking suspect faces charges for cases in Miami Beach, Miami Gardens, Miami

Malique Newberry Police officers arrested Malique Newberry on Monday in Miami Beach.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 24-year-old man faced charges in three Miami-Dade County cases involving the Miami Beach, Miami Gardens, and Miami police departments.

Malique Newberry, a human trafficking suspect, appeared in bond court on Tuesday after Miami Beach police officers arrested him in South Beach.

On Monday, police officers responded to a report of a man attacking a woman at Fifth Street and Lenox Avenue, records show.

A woman, who accused Newberry and another man of beating her, flagged a police officer at Sixth Street and Jefferson Avenue, according to an arrest report.

Inmate records show corrections booked Newberry on Monday night at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remained on Tuesday afternoon.

On Nov. 13, a woman -- who had managed to escape from Newberry after a beating -- walked in crying and asking for help at Race Trac, at 19100 NW 7 Ave., in Miami Gardens, according to a police arrest report.

Miami Gardens police officers responded, and the woman reported that she was in fear for her life and fought to escape from Newberry, who had kept her identification, and gambled away her money.

“This money was obtained from having sex with male clients ... the arrangement of the sex for money was orchestrated by Mr. Newberry,” a Miami Gardens police officer wrote, according to an arrest report.

Miami-Dade County court records show prosecutors filed two felony cases against Newberry on Tuesday and a misdemeanor case on Sept. 24 after an arrest on Aug. 24 in Miami. The three cases were pending.

“I will whip you out! You should look at my record. I am not like the others. I will whip you,” Newberry told a Miami police officer, according to a police report for his arrest in August.

In the Miami Gardens Police Department’s felony case filed on Tuesday, Newberry faced charges of human trafficking, deriving support from the proceeds of prostitution, aggravated battery, attempted false imprisonment, attempted robbery by sudden snatching, and possession of identification used to harass.

A bond court judge denied him bond for the human trafficking charge, ordered him to stay away from the victim, and set his bond for the other charges at $15,000.

In the Miami Beach Police Department’s felony case filed on Tuesday, Newberry faced two counts of cocaine possession and one count of possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana. His bond for the cocaine and marijuana charges was $2,501. His arraignment is at 9 a.m. on Dec. 31.

In the Miami Police Department’s misdemeanor case filed on Sept. 24, Newberry faced charges for threatening a law enforcement officer and criminal mischief. His arraignment was on Nov. 20. He has a trial hearing pending on Jan. 14.

Newberry also had a warrant case for knowingly driving with a suspended license in Miami Beach.

Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Betsy Alvarez-Zane was presiding over the Miami and Miami Gardens cases. Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Richard Hersch was set to preside over the Miami Beach case.
