FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies warned on Monday that scammers have been posing as deputies, sergeants, and pretrial specialists.

To avoid becoming a victim, deputies asked the public to beware of callers who use high-pressure tactics to persuade victims into sending money electronically.

The scammers have been asking victims to use Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, gift cards, and other electronic transfer services.

Deputies issued a statement to remind the public that BSO “will never request money over the phone, through Zelle, Cash App, Venmo, gift cards, or any other electric transfer service for bail, pretrial programs or the release of an individual from custody.”

Deputies asked anyone who gets a call from a scammer demanding payment to hang up immediately, avoid sending money, and call the main jail at 954-831-5900 to verify if a relative has been arrested or the BSO non-emergency line at 954-764-4357 to report a scammer’s call.
