MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 25-year-old man was arrested Wednesday by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office after he allegedly put a tracking device in his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle, authorities said.
According to an arrest report, deputies responded to the 10300 block of Southwest 119th Street on the night of Oct. 12 after the victim reported that her ex-boyfriend, Andres Ignacio Perea, vandalized her car and then texted her, “Okay, I can fix it for you.”
Deputies said the victim’s mother then told deputies that about two weeks prior to the vandalism, the victim received a notification on her cellphone that an Apple AirTag was nearby.
She said she and her daughter searched the vehicle and found the AirTag in the fender flare.
They then discovered that the AirTag belonged to Perea, authorities said.
Deputies said the victim provided them with a photo of the AirTag notification, which showed the last four digits of the owner’s phone number, which matched the last four digits of Perea’s phone number.
According to the arrest report, a subpoena records request was eventually made for the AirTag and it was confirmed to be registered to Perea.
Deputies noted in the report that the victim, who had dated Perea for about eight years before they broke up, had obtained a restraining order against him that was granted for five years due to another court case.
Authorities said Perea turned himself in to deputies Wednesday at the MDSO Kendall District station and invoked his right to counsel.
He was arrested on a charge of installing a tracking device without consent.
As of Thursday morning, Perea was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Online jail records show he also faces a criminal mischief charge in connection with a separate case and is being held on a $5,000 bond.
