Miami-Dade gunman claims self-defense; detective reports video shows ‘premeditation’

Brian Laoz Deputies arrested Brian Laoz early Friday morning in Miami-Dade County over a shooting on Tuesday in the Naranja neighborhood, records show.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 22-year-old man told the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detective who arrested him that he had shot two people in self-defense, records show.

On Friday night, Brian Laoz was at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, according to Miami-Dade County inmate records.

“He took efforts to lay low ... he took steps not to return to his permanent address ... purchase a short-term rental unit under another person’s name with an ultimate plan to escape the area to Georgia,” a detective wrote about Laoz’s behavior after the shooting, according to the arrest report.

Laoz, who works at a gas station, reported that a few weeks ago, he walked along Southwest 138 Court by a house near 266 Street in the Naranja neighborhood, when one of the people that he later admitted to shooting “confronted” him, according to the report.

“I am going to kill you,” he told Laoz, according to the detective’s narrative of what Laoz said during an interrogation on Thursday, records show.

Laoz said the conflict was over a firearm, and after the threat, “he was given a firearm from someone and told not to walk the streets without it,” according to the M-DSO deputy’s report.

The shooting that the M-DSO detective arrested Laoz for was shortly after 6:10 p.m. on Tuesday in the same area in Naranja, records show.

A victim who was shot in the right leg told a deputy that he and the victim who suffered a wound to the face and right leg -- and was intubated at Jackson South Medical Center -- were at 26621 SW 138 Court “to buy drugs,” records show.

Surveillance video shows Laoz shooting at the two victims who ran for cover and then running southbound on Southwest 138 Court toward 268 Street, according to the deputy’s arrest report.

Laoz said, “he produced his firearm from his waistband and began shooting in self-defense,” the deputy wrote, according to the arrest report.

The deputy reported the video shows Laoz moved “forward at the victims while shooting,” which appeared “intimidating and forceful, with premeditation,” according to the arrest report.

Another surveillance video shows Laoz on Southwest 268 Street, west of 138 Court, “pacing back and forth with a firearm in hand,” according to the arrest report.

The evidence in the case also includes a ShotSpotter report for 18 shots fired and 20 spent bullet casings at the crime scene, records show.

Laoz “cannot recall what happened to the firearm,” the deputy wrote, according to the arrest report.

The M-DSO detective arrested Laoz, who lives in the Homestead Air Reserve Base area, at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at the M-DSO South District Station in Cutler Bay, according to the deputy’s arrest report.

Miami-Dade corrections booked Laoz shortly after 5:40 a.m. on Friday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, according to inmate records.

Laoz faced two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, shooting a deadly missile, tampering with physical evidence, and criminal mischief. He was held without bond.
