NORTH MIAMI, Fla. — April Lynch is among the tenants at Sans Souci Estates Apartments, which was built in 1962, in North Miami, who feared homelessness.
Lynch and other residents said they received contradictory notices. Some were from the county and others from the property owner.
“But you guys took the rent on the first, and then you gave us notices on the second,” Lynch said about an order to vacate by Thursday.
The Miami-Dade County’s Unsafe Structures Board, a quasi-judicial advisory committee, and the city of North Miami’s special magistrate reviewed the “unsafe building” case at 11930 NE 19 Dr.
Last year, an engineering assessment concluded that several units should be “immediately” vacated and recommended an investigation of the ground level’s floor framing system.
The building was past due in submitting re-certification, and there were unsafe structure violations and reports of mold and termite damage.
Despite this, there were tenants. And, without help from the property owner, the county, or the city to relocate, some said on Wednesday that they still didn’t know where to go.
“We are stuck between a rock and a hard place; we have children,” Lynch said. “What are we supposed to do?”
