PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — A pair of thieves was taking advantage of vulnerable shoppers in South Florida who weren’t paying attention to their belongings, according to police.
Mavis Johnson and Tammy Evans “worked together to steal victims’ wallets and then use their credit cards” throughout the tri-county area, according to police.
Johnson, 59, disguised herself “by wearing different outfits, wigs, and medical masks,” and Evans, 57, “would act as the getaway driver,” according to police.
On Wednesday, in Boynton Beach, while on probation for previous crimes, Johnson was at Ross and the Dollar Tree on Congress Avenue, according to police.
Johnson, of West Palm Beach, and Evans, of Boynton Beach, then traveled together to Target off Boynton Beach Boulevard.
Johnson was wearing a new disguise when she walked into Target, and used stolen credit cards to buy gift cards, according to police.
Police officers arrested Johnson and Evans, who faced charges of petit theft, unlawful possession of a stolen credit card, criminal use of personal identification, theft by taking or retaining possession of a card taken, violation of probation, and scheme to defraud person over 65 years of age.
Detectives asked anyone who may have been a victim of the duo to call 561-742-6100.
