WASHINGTON — Sen Rick Scott talked about the rush to get work done before the August recess and about the scandal related to the Jeffrey Epstein case records.
Scott said the Senate should consider canceling the recess to complete a to-do list that includes confirming dozens of appointments.
“Democrats are slowing it down,” Scott said. “They are making us take a vote on every nominee.”
Six months into President Donald Trump’s term, there are more than 100 top-level positions in the federal government that remain vacant pending approval from the Senate.
“The only way this is going to get done is if we just stay and work five days a week, work weekends,” Scott said. “If we need to take our August recess off and work rather than have the recess, we need to do that.”
Lawmakers were also under the gun on budget negotiations. Congress needs to approve a spending plan by the end of September to avoid a government shutdown, and Republicans will need the support of at least some Democrats to get a deal done.
“Republicans don’t want a government shutdown, we want to do the budget, so we need to work at that,” Scott said.
The biggest wrench in the works is the growing scandal over the records in the cases of Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, who is appealing her conviction.
Scott said the Trump administration needed to respond to the public outcry for transparency.
“I think it was important in the election last year that they didn’t think the Biden administration government was very transparent, and I think it’s very important that this government is transparent,” Scott said.
Scott also said he trusts U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.
