MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A specialized U.S. Customs and Border Protection unit responded to the “high trend of narcotics being smuggled outbound” from Miami International Airport, according to a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy’s recent report.
A CBP Passenger Enforcement Rover Team, which conducts targeted inspections, reported a woman was traveling to the Dominican Republic with over 28 vacuum-sealed packages of marijuana weighing about 37 pounds, records show.
Eliana Acosta, who lives in Pennsylvania’s town of McAdoo, wasn’t allowed to board her American Airlines flight to Santo Domingo, and Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested her at 10 p.m. on Thursday, according to a deputy’s arrest report.
Miami-Dade corrections booked Acosta, 30, shortly after 12:40 a.m. on Friday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, according to inmate records. She faced a charge of marijuana trafficking, and her bond was $10,000.
