WASHINGTON – The White House is warning countries about an upcoming deadline on tariffs.
It confirmed Tuesday that the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative sent a letter to America’s trading partners in an effort to lock down new deals and move forward negotiations.
“This letter was simply to remind these countries that the deadline is approaching and the president expects good deals,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
On social media, Trump said, “Because of tariffs, our economy is booming!”
This comes after his “Liberation Day” tariffs were put on hold, suspended for 90 days, and are set to expire next month on July 8.
“They need to cut deals with the U.S. – the tariff agenda he believes very strongly in it,” Leavitt said, including with one of the nation’s largest trading partners, China.
Amid reports that Trump is likely to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, in mid-May, the U.S. rolled back the tax on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%.
In response, Beijing dropped its levy on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%.
“The administration is actively monitoring China’s compliance with the Geneva trade agreement,” Leavitt said. “I know the United States, on our end, we have compliance with the terms we set.”
