“I have been fully briefed on the tragic shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The FBI quickly responded and they are on the scene. The White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation. Please join me in praying for everyone involved,” Trump wrote on social media.

The shooting was also a focus of talks with Vice President J.D. Vance, who had lunch with Trump on Wednesday.

Vance wrote, “We’re at the White House monitoring the situation in Minneapolis. Join all of us in praying for the victims!”

State and local leaders also weighed in throughout the day.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said, “we are heartbroken over the tragic violence” and added, “and send our gratitude to law enforcement and the first responders who are on the scene.”

Florida Sen. Rick Scott said he and his wife are “heartbroken.”

South Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson said, “this is horrifying! My heart breaks for the victims of the Minneapolis school shooting, especially the children whose lives were taken. As a parent, former teacher and principal, I can’t fathom such cruelty. Gun violence has no place in schools, and this cannot be normalized.”

Rep. Jared Moskowitz added, “I know this feeling all too well. Seven years later, it’s still not gone.”

Manuel Oliver, whose son Joaquin was killed in the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, also shared a message for the president.

”I have a message for the president you can make this happen. You can actually stop this from happening and there is no political risk .. cause you will still be the president for three years. So this is a time for us to change things. And I think President Trump can do this and it’s coming from me and I think we should plan solutions.”
