DeSantis gives final State of the State speech

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida lawmakers have begun a 60-day session with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ final State of the State address outlining priorities for his last year in office.

Senate President Ben Albritton and House Speaker Daniel Perez ― both Republicans like DeSantis ― also spoke to lawmakers at the State Capitol in Tallahassee.

DeSantis touted what he said were his successes in office and is launching a property tax relief plan.

“We have fulfilled our promises,” DeSantis said. “We have more time, and we need to make the most of it.”

Albritton emphasized “collaboration and communication,” while Perez highlighted the personal efforts of lawmakers.

“This year, I look forward to providing voters the opportunity to pass meaningful property tax relief and again this year, the Florida Legislature will pass a balanced budget that holds the line on state spending, pays down debt, cuts taxes and saves for the future,” Albritton said.

Democrats, in a superminority, clapped back, talking about affordability and how the Republican-dominated legislature, in the past couple of sessions, has done anything but in their eyes.
