WASHINGTON — House Democrats are attempting to use Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s budget to push for new restrictions on the agency, as Republicans move forward with a Homeland Security funding bill.
The proposed funding measure for the Department of Homeland Security includes tens of millions of dollars for new ICE training programs and body-worn cameras. The funding comes as the Trump administration intensifies its immigration crackdown in multiple states.
Democratic leaders say they plan to oppose the bill, arguing it does not go far enough to curb what they describe as aggressive and dangerous enforcement tactics by ICE agents.
“ICE is out of control,” said California Rep. Ted Lieu (D).
California Rep. Peter Aguilar (D), said the agency needs stricter limits on its authority.
“They should not be allowed to detain U.S. citizens, and they are,” Aguilar said. “They should not be allowed to fire at moving vehicles unless their life is in danger, and they are.”
Despite growing Democratic opposition, Republicans are expected to have enough votes to pass the bill on their own. The House is likely to vote on the measure Thursday.
