TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida lawmakers passed what they call an “election integrity” bill on Wednesday.

House Bill 991 is a sweeping overhaul of Florida’s election process. It passed 83 to 31.

Among other things, the proposal would require stronger proof of U.S. citizenship to register and vote and add citizenship status to driver’s licenses.

Republicans say the stricter requirements will stop fraud.

Democrats say fraud is rare and warn the changes could disenfranchise eligible voters.

Similar legislation is making its way through the Florida Senate.

Lawmakers also passed two measures intended to honor slain conservative political activist Charlie Kirk.
