U.S. State Secretary Marco Rubio responded to the Cuban government’s report about a fatal shooting related to a Florida-registered boat on Wednesday.
During a news conference, Rubio said the U.S. was working to “independently verify facts” about the incident at sea before briefing U.S. lawmakers.
“We do have constant contact with them at the Coast Guard level,” Rubio said about agreements on law enforcement related to immigration and narcotrafficking.
The Cuban Coast Guard’s initial report to the U.S. Coast Guard was “fragmentary,” according to Rubio. The Cuban Embassy in the U.S. released a statement on X.
“They provided more details on the social media post they put out, as well as a notice they sent ... from their embassy to the State Department,” Rubio said.
The Trump administration cut the supply of Venezuelan oil to the communist island, which has prompted an energy crisis that has been spiraling out of control, with shortages of medicine and food.
“The only way Cuba is going to have a better future is if it has a better economic model,” Rubio said.
