Two Democratic candidates are seeking to succeed U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz in Florida’s newly redrawn 25th Congressional District.
The candidates are U.S. Rep. Jared E. Moskowitz, who represents Florida’s 23rd Congressional District, and Oliver A. Larkin.
According to campaign finance data submitted to the Federal Election Commission on June 30, Moskowitz, 45, is at the top of the list with more than $2.65 million in total receipts.
“Things are not affordable. People’s homes are not affordable,” Moskowitz said. “Their home insurance is not affordable, groceries are not affordable. Healthcare is not affordable.”
Moskowitz, who was born in Coral Springs, served as Parkland City commissioner from 2006 to 2012 and in the Florida House of Representatives from 2012 to 2019.
Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Moskowitz as the director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management from 2019 to 2021. He has been representing Florida’s 23rd Congressional District since 2023.
“The majority of Democrats want someone who can win this seat and then make Hakeem Jeffries the speaker so we can get the gavel and hold the Trump administration accountable,” said Moskowitz, who earned degrees from George Washington University and Nova Southeastern University’s law school.
Larkin, 32, a union organizer, follows Moskowitz and five Republicans with more than $541,000 in total receipts, according to the campaign finance data.
“To be clear, I voted for Congressman Moskowitz, so I have been disappointed as many South Floridians have been,” said Larkin, who was born in California, grew up in Fort Lauderdale, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of the South in Tennessee.
The Democratic Socialists of America, a New York-based political organization that seeks to dismantle capitalism, endorsed Larkin, who supports Medicare for All and universal childcare.
“Right now, nobody in the DSA has won a red seat. This is a red seat in the general election,” Moskowitz said about the endorsement.
The mail-in ballot request deadline is Aug. 6, the Democratic primary is Aug. 18, and the general election is Nov. 3.
