WASHINGTON — Israel’s security cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposed temporary full military occupation of the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu’s office announced on X in Hebrew that the cabinet’s majority vote was based on five goals that were meant to end the war. The list:

1. Disarming Hamas

2. The return of all the hostages, dead or alive

3. Demilitarization of the Gaza Strip

4. Israeli security control in the Gaza Strip

5. The existence of an alternative civilian government that is not Hamas or the Palestinian Authority.

The families of the 50 hostages -- including 20 who likely remain alive since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023 -- worried about the new military action.

During the war, Israel has accused Hamas of using Palestinian civilians as shields and operating in hospitals and schools, and Hamas has accused Israel of genocide.

President Donald Trump’s priorities in the Gaza Strip are to remove Hamas from power, free the hostages, and deliver aid, Tommy Pigott, a State Department spokesman, said Thursday.
