Ex-Cuban spy Juan Pablo Roque dies

Juan Pablo Roque, a former Cuban spy accused of double-crossing the FBI, has died in Cuba. He was 70.

The U.S. State Department accused Roque, a former MiG-23 pilot who joined the ranks of the Brothers to the Rescue, of espionage through the Wasp Network, a group of Cuban spies who infiltrated exile groups.

The former Cuban Air Force major, who pretended to have defected in 1992, returned to Cuba after the Cuban military shot down four members of Brothers to the Rescue over the Florida Straits in 1996.

“I was responsible with providing the FBI with intelligence about all the anti-Castro organizations, not just Brothers to the Rescue,” Roque said during an interview with CNN in Havana. He also added, “I warned the U.S. government they were going to shoot them down.”

Ana Margarita Martinez, Roque’s ex-wife in Miami, told Univision that his daughter in Cuba reported he died after he was infected with a virus and had undergone open heart surgery.
