Cuba remains topic of conversation amid talks of a Trump deal

Should U.S. troops go to Cuba? Johnson says there is no need

DORAL, Fla. — U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson was in Doral on Tuesday for the House Republicans’ annual retreat.

During a news conference, the future of Cuba came up. President Donald Trump recently said a “friendly takeover” was a possibility.

“Should we be sending a bunch of American troops there? I don’t think there is a necessity for that,” Johnson said.

Trump tasked State Secretary Marco Rubio with U.S.-Cuba negotiations. USA Today reported a deal would include new terms on energy and tourism.

“American history shows that, often times, Republican presidents that have the necessary anti-communist credentials are able to sell deals with governments we previously wouldn’t have negotiated with,” said Aaron Rosen, the founder of the World Affairs Council.

Meanwhile, on the communist island, the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance released a video of pro-Democracy activists engaging in a new “Save Cuba” campaign.
