MIAMI — Peru, a partner of the U.S., has had nine presidents in a decade, and the next could be a former first lady who is running for the fourth time.

On Sunday, three polls by Datum International, Ipsos Peru, and the Peruvian Market Research Company placed Keiko Fujimori as the frontrunner.

There are nearly three dozen candidates. Fujimori, 50, whose father, former President Alberto Fujimori, who died on Sept. 11, 2024, is among the right-wing candidates who promise to reduce crime rates.

The first-round vote is on April 12. If no candidate wins more than 50% of the vote, the top two will advance to a runoff on June 7.

Peruvians living in Florida are able to register and vote. Peru’s consul general in Coral Gables is David Adalberto Vergara Pilares, at 1401 Ponce de León Boulevard. For more information, e-mail informacion@consulado-peru.com or call 786-347-2500.
