The 26-year-old guard plans to sign a two-year, $24 million fully guaranteed contract to return to the Miami Heat, according to multiple reports.
Mitchell joined the Heat on Feb. 6 and quickly made an impact, averaging 10.3 points, 5.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 30 regular-season games — including 15 starts — while shooting a career-best 50.4% from the field and 44.7% from 3-point range.
The former first-round pick also logged more than 2,000 minutes for the first time in his career, meeting the NBA’s “starter criteria” and securing an $8.7 million qualifying offer.
Although the Heat were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Mitchell stood out, averaging 15.0 points and 6.3 assists in the series.
He also hit three of four shots from beyond the arc in overtime vs. the Atlanta Hawks to send Miami to the playoffs and lock up the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Mitchell’s new deal was negotiated between Heat front office officials and his agent, Josh Beauregard-Bell.
