On Monday, just hours before the NHL Free Agency period is set to open, Florida and defenseman Aaron Ekblad came to terms on a long-term contract extension.

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, Florida has signed Ekblad to a new eight-year extension that carries an average annual value (AAV) of $6.1 million.

The Panthers originally selected Ekblad with the first overall selection at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

He will join a core group of players that includes Matthew Tkachuk, Sasha Barkov, Seth Jones, Carter Verhaeghe, Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett, Gus Forsling and Anton Lundell, all of whom are signed through at least the end of the decade.

After winning back-to-back Stanley Cups, it appears Florida is set up to continue succeeding for the foreseeable future.
