MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Bayron Matos was airlifted to the hospital after getting hurt during practice on the team’s first day of training camp Wednesday.
The exact nature of his injury hasn’t been confirmed.
The team said the incident occurred near the end of practice.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed that Matos, 24, who is in his second year, was in stable condition after being transported to a trauma center in the area.
Matos is originally from the Dominican Republic and joined the Dolphins last year through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program.
He previously played college basketball at New Mexico and South Florida. While at USF, he walked on to the football team but only saw limited action, playing just 22 snaps.
Matos signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent and spent his rookie season on the practice squad.
Although the Dolphins already have starting tackles in Patrick Paul and Austin Jackson, Matos has been competing for a backup spot alongside players like Larry Borom, Jackson Carman, and Kion Smith.
BURNS ALSO INJURED
Miami Dolphins cornerback Artie Burns is feared to have suffered a torn ACL after injuring his knee during practice Wednesday, according to multiple reports.
