MILWAUKEE — The Miami Marlins were five outs away from securing a sweep against the hottest team in the National League, and winning their third series in a row.
The Milwaukee Brewers, however, erased a 2–1 deficit to walk off the Marlins, 3–2, in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday afternoon at American Family Field.
With the bases loaded and one out, the Brewers’ Blake Perkins delivered a game-winning single to center field.
Marlins right-hander Eury Pérez delivered another strong outing, throwing five innings of one-run ball while striking out six batters.
With a 1.29 ERA in five July starts, Pérez set a new club record.
In the home half of the eighth inning, Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio led off with a double. However, the very next batter saw a heads-up play by Otto Lopez, who got the lead runner out at third, protecting the Marlins’ lead.
Heriberto Hernández collected his second home run in as many games.
At 50–54, six games behind the San Diego Padres for the final National League wild card spot and with the MLB Trade Deadline just four days away, the team enters a critical stretch of games starting Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
