Tua Tagovailoa hands out backpacks to students, then takes command at Dolphins camp

Tua Tagovailoa passes out backpacks to kids ahead of Dolphins training camp

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Tua Tagovailoa had his hands full Monday morning — first with backpacks, then with the football.

Before taking the field to kick off Week 2 of Miami Dolphins training camp, the quarterback spent part of his morning giving out backpacks and school supplies to children from the Urban League of Broward County.

The “Gatorade Get Fit for School” event, held on-site, gave local kids the chance to meet Tagovailoa, get autographs and take photos with one of Miami’s biggest stars.

“It’s always great seeing athletes give back, but it means even more when it’s someone like Tua — someone these kids really look up to,” said former Dolphins wide receiver Twan Russell, who helped lead the event. “We want them to understand that when you set a plan and stick to it, you put yourself in a position to succeed.”

After the handshakes and smiles, Tagovailoa jogged onto the field in the coveted orange practice jersey — awarded daily to the previous session’s top performer.

With that came the privilege of choosing the team’s practice music, setting the tone on a hot and humid South Florida morning.

The mood was upbeat, but the Dolphins are dealing with more serious issues in the secondary.

Head coach Mike McDaniel addressed a growing list of injuries in the cornerback room, most notably a weekend leg injury to slot cornerback Kader Kohou.

While McDaniel didn’t offer specifics, he described the situation as “day-to-day” and downplayed concerns.

Still, Miami made moves to reinforce the position, signing veteran cornerbacks Jack Jones and Mike Hilton. Both players were on the field Monday and will join a young, banged-up defensive back group that has already lost Artie Burns to a season-ending ACL tear.

“This is a very cool opportunity for all those guys involved,” McDaniel said. “Mike and Jack are very thirsty for the opportunity, and now we get to evaluate not just them —but how the others respond to the competition.”
