MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle says he’s focused on team success over personal milestones as he enters a new season aiming to bounce back from missing the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career.
“Just the highs and lows, taking the good with the bad,” Waddle said Saturday when asked what he learned from last season. “It was a learning experience, not just for me but for everybody that was on that team. You kind of forget how hard it is to reach the landmark.”
Waddle emphasized that he’s focused on the bigger picture.
“What’s a thousand yards if it’s not a winning season? I think it all goes back to team success,” Waddle said. “So I’m just focused on the little things that I can do; if that’s me going for a lot of yards, that’s that. Me blocking, just trying to help the team win, for real.”
He praised the energy and accountability brought by wide receivers coach Robert Prince and senior pass game coordinator Bobby Slowik.
“They’re very on to the little details in the offense and they just harp on the little things each and every day. They bring in that edge to us, just holding us accountable each and every day to the same standard,” he said.
Waddle also spoke about his chemistry with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who he’s played alongside for most of the last eight years.
“Me and Tua have just been playing together so long. It’s like another second nature thing,” he said. “But there’s always room to grow.”
Offensive tackle Patrick Paul, who McDaniel recently said is having a strong training camp, described his standout block as “just fun.” Paul was highlighted by his coached for sealing a block that set up a screen pass that went to Jaylen Waddle for a touchdown during training camp on Saturday.
“Getting out in space, working on the timing of it … then once you’re out there and the play goes, you’re just trying to take anything out. Clear the path, clear the way and then it was all touchdown, so can’t complain,” Paul said.
The former University of Houston standout also credited retired veteran Terron Armstead with helping him develop.
“Honestly he was just coaching me up,” Paul added. “Any little detail he might see or just giving me props.”
The Dolphins will return to practice on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Baptist Health Training Complex.
