TAMPA, Fla. — Veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is visiting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday and is expected to sign with the team, according to sources confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Bridgewater, 32, last appeared on the Detroit Lions’ roster in December 2024, briefly coming out of retirement to back up Jared Goff. He didn’t play in the regular season but completed his only pass for 3 yards during a playoff loss to the Washington Commanders.
Bridgewater has played for six NFL teams since entering the league in 2014, compiling a 33-32 record with over 15,000 passing yards and 75 touchdowns.
He made the Pro Bowl in 2015 after leading the Vikings to an 11-5 season. He retired in 2024 and became the head coach at his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School, helping the team win a state championship.
However, Bridgewater’s coaching career hit a roadblock in June.
He was suspended from his role at Miami Northwestern following a Florida High School Athletic Association investigation into alleged impermissible benefits given to players.
Bridgewater had previously posted on social media that he spent $14,000 of his own money on team expenses, including preseason camp, transportation and therapy for players.
Though Bridgewater later said there’s no active investigation since he’s no longer employed by the school, Miami-Dade County Public Schools confirmed the probe is ongoing and emphasized their commitment to FHSAA rules.
The situation has sparked a wave of public support, with many praising Bridgewater for helping his players.
Bridgewater is expected to backup quarterback Baker Mayfield since the team is dealing with multiple injuries at the position.
