ATLANTA — History was made Saturday afternoon at Truist Park during the first game of a doubleheader between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves.
Jen Pawol, 48, became the first female umpire to work a Major League Baseball regular season game.
After working more than 1,200 games in the Minor Leagues, Pawol has finally seen her biggest dream become a reality.
“I’m aware of the gravity; I’m aware of the magnitude,” Pawol said on a Zoom call with reporters this past Thursday.
“I believe that I’m going to be a very good steward and representative for young girls and women, and boys and men, that this is possible,” a proud Pawol said.
Pawol is serving as the first base umpire for the opener of the doubleheader, and will move to third base for the nightcap.
On Sunday, Pawol will be behind the plate – calling balls and strikes.
Before the first pitch on Saturday, first-year Marlins manager Clayton McCullough shook Pawol’s hand and leaned in to share some special words with her.
Shortly after, a group photo was taken.
Pawol gave the cap she wore in her umpiring debut to the MLB Hall of Fame. The Braves defeated the Marlins 7-1.
A landmark day for women in baseball and another Diamond Dream achieved.
