DETROIT — Rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers and wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. connected for two touchdowns, helping the Miami Dolphins top the Detroit Lions 21-17 in their preseason matchup at Ford Field on Saturday afternoon.
Both Ewers and Zach Wilson greatly improved after struggling in last week’s preseason opener against the Chicago Bears.
Wilson completed 15 of 23 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown, including an 11-yard score to Dee Eskridge, who fought his way into the endzone on the first score of the game.
Eskridge finished with three catches for 53 yards and a touchdown, following up his solid performance in the first preseason game.
Ewers and Wease Jr. teamed up on Miami’s second touchdown, a 15-yard skinny post during a four-play, 36-yard drive.
Later in the game, Ewers found Wease again for an 8-yard score that proved to be the game-winner.
Ewers finished 11 of 17 for 116 yards and two touchdowns, while Wease led the team with six catches for 80 yards.
Miami’s running game showed balance, mixing power and speed. Ollie Gordon Jr. led the ground attack with 50 yards on 10 carries, while Aaron Shampklin added 32 yards on just two touches.
It was a solid performance who are looking to lock a roster spot after the team lost running back Alexander Mattison for the season.
The Lions kept the game close with Kyle Allen throwing touchdown passes of 11 and 18 yards to wide receivers Jackson Meeks and Isaac TeSlaa. Miami also nearly gave up a scoring opportunity when AJ Henning muffed a punt, allowing Detroit to recover at the Dolphins’ 25-yard line.
But the defense held, and Dolphins cornerback Ethan Robinson sealed the win with an interception late on Hendon Hooker on a pass intended for tight end Zach Horton.
Miami (1-0-1) will host the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1) for their first home preseason game next Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium.
