Fort Lauderdale United sets sights on championship as 2nd season kicks off vs. Lexington

DAVIE, Fla. — Fort Lauderdale United FC is back for its second season in the USL Super League, and the bar has been set high after an impressive inaugural campaign that saw the professional women’s soccer team reach the league final.

Fans will now have another way to follow the action — United’s games will air on Local 10 starting next week, giving the club even greater exposure across South Florida.

“The standard is high,” captain Sh’Nia Gordon said. “We were at the final last year. Now it’s time to go to the final and win the final. So that’s all I have to say about that.”

United, one of eight teams to launch the league in its debut year, quickly established itself as a contender. The team is looking to build on that success in year two, while integrating several new faces on the roster.

“We come from all different backgrounds, and I think that’s great,” midfielder Darya Rajaee said. “We learn from each other. We grow a lot.”

Leadership will be critical with a younger squad entering the season. Rajaee said it’s a role she embraces.

“I think it’s super important just because we do have a pretty young squad to help lead them and help them grow as well,” she said.

Discipline and effort will again be at the core of the team’s approach, Gordon added, whether from starters or those coming off the bench.

Beyond results on the field, United is also focused on continuing to inspire young players in South Florida and growing the sport locally.

“Growing up, I really only had a couple of teams in the NWSL that I would be watching,” Rajaee added. “Even when I graduated college, I went abroad to play in Germany and Portugal just because of the limited access that women’s professional soccer had. So this league is absolutely incredible to grow the sport.”

Fort Lauderdale United opens its home schedule Saturday night at Beyond Bankard Stadium on the campus of Nova Southeastern University vs. Lexington SC. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
