MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said Wednesday that running back De’Von Achane, who has been dealing with a calf injury, is expected to be available for Miami’s season opener against Indianapolis.

“All indications for us is that Achane will be ready Week 1 to go,” Grier said.

The Dolphins’ backfield has been thinned by injuries this preseason. Jaylen Wright is expected to miss time, and Grier said the team plans to add veteran depth to the practice squad.

“We’ve been talking to people here last night and today so there will be some veterans here or maybe a younger player, too, we’ll add in that are good players that will fit the system,” Grier said.

Rookie running back Ollie Gordon has turned heads with his violent running style and could see an sizable workload as Achane recovers from his injury.

Grier also said right tackle Austin Jackson is expected to be ready for Week 1. Meanwhile, second-year cornerback Cam Smith was placed on the non-football injury list.

The Dolphins’ offseason has been marked by injuries to key players, but also by roster additions intended to strengthen depth.

Miami recently signed veteran linebacker Matthew Judon to bolster a pass rush that has struggled with injuries in recent years.

“It would be naïve for me to say the health part wasn’t involved,” Grier said. “But obviously having four guys if they’re healthy that can really rush; it also helps the back end. Being able to have four guys up there or five guys, however we want to play them, that can rush the quarterback enables us to have more people in coverage.”

When asked about the team’s outlook under owner Stephen Ross, Grier said the organization is aligned in its push to compete at the highest level.

“Steve (Ross) has been tremendously supportive,” Grier said. “Like everyone, he’s competitive. He wants to win like we all do … we want to win playoff games, we want to win Super Bowls. So none of us are happy that it hasn’t happened, but also when we work through stuff we are very clear on what our goals are.”

The Dolphins open the season Sept. 7 on the road against the Indianapolis Colts. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
