TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The first upset of the 2025 college football season happened on Saturday.
Unranked Florida State (1-0) rushed for 230 yards and cruised to a shocking 31–17 win over No. 8 Alabama (0-1) Saturday afternoon at the newly renovated Doak Campbell Stadium.
Coming off a 9–4 campaign in 2024 under new head coach Kalen DeBoer, Alabama was hoping for an early season statement.
Florida State went 2–10 last season under head coach Mike Norvell.
Florida State transfer quarterback Thomas Castellanos, who came over from Boston College, led all rushers with 78 yards in the 14-point win.
Alabama opened the scoring with a 17-play, 85-yard drive to take an early 7–0 lead, but the Crimson Tide couldn’t pull away from there.
On Florida State’s opening possession, the Seminoles responded with a seven-play, 75-yard drive that featured a 40-yard pass from Castellanos to senior wide receiver Squirrel White, setting up first-and-goal at the Alabama 9-yard line.
Alabama trailed by as many as 17 points, with quarterback Ty Simpson throwing 43 passes, completing 23 for 254 yards and two touchdowns.
Florida State will host the second of three consecutive home games to start the season against East Texas A&M next Saturday at noon ET — a game the Seminoles are expected to be heavily favored in.
Alabama will look to regroup as it welcomes UL Monroe to Bryant-Denny Stadium to kick off the home portion of its schedule.
That game is scheduled to begin Saturday at 7:45 p.m. ET.
