FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets announced on Thursday that he will retire at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season, bringing an end to a decorated career that spanned nearly two decades with Barcelona, Spain and Miami.
The 37-year-old Spaniard revealed his decision in a video posted to Instagram, saying he felt the time was right to step away from the game.
“I feel like it’s time to say goodbye to my career as a professional soccer player,” Busquets said. “It has been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story that I always dreamed of. Soccer has gifted me unique experiences in wonderful places, with the best travel companions.”
Busquets thanked Barcelona, the club where he became a star, as well as the Spanish national team and Inter Miami, where he joined in 2023.
“Thank you to FC Barcelona, the club of my life,” he said. “I celebrated many titles and lived unique moments at that I’ll never forget. Thank you to the Spain national team. It was an honor to represent it so many times and to enjoy achievements that will always remain in my heart. Thank you to Inter Miami for letting me be part of a new and growing club, where I wanted to live a new experience and contribute my part.”
Busquets won 32 trophies with Barcelona, including La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey titles.
With Spain, he lifted the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship.
He joined Miami in 2023 alongside former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, helping the club capture its first Leagues Cup that same year and the Supporters’ Shield in 2024.
He made more than 700 appearances for Barcelona, cementing his place as one of the greatest midfielders in football history.
Miami said Busquets will remain central to the team’s playoff push this fall as he closes out his final season.
