Miami Dolphins, GM Chris Grier mutually part ways

Mike McDaniel will remain as head coach for the remainder of the 2025-26 season, reports say

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins and general manager Chris Grier mutually agreed to part ways Friday morning, team owner Stephen Ross confirmed.

Grier had been with the organization since 2000 and served as general manager since 2016.

His departure comes a day after the Dolphins fell to 2-7 with a 28-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football, further dimming their postseason hopes.

Dolphins senior personnel executive Champ Kelly will take over on an interim basis, with the NFL trade deadline just four days away.

“This morning, I made the decision along with general manager Chris Grier to mutually part ways,” Ross said. “I have incredible respect for Chris and his family, and I want to thank him for his many contributions to the Miami Dolphins over the past 26 years.”

Ross said the move reflects the organization’s need for immediate improvement.

“As I assessed the state of the team and in my discussions with Chris, it became clear to both of us that change could not wait,” he said. “We must improve — in 2025, 2026 and beyond — and it needs to start right now.”

Ross said the team will begin its search for a new general manager immediately and praised Kelly for stepping up. “There is a lot of football left to play and we all need to fight even harder,” Ross said.

“I have always been and remain committed to building a winning team that consistently competes for championships,” he added. “Our performance on the field and our team-building process have not been good enough. There are no excuses. You deserve a championship-caliber team you can be proud of.”

During his tenure, Grier oversaw multiple coaching changes and major roster moves, including the drafting of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the acquisitions of stars Tyreek Hill and Jalen Ramsey.

The Dolphins have not won a playoff game since the 2000 season — the longest active drought in the NFL.

McDaniel will remain as the Dolphins head coach for the remainder of the 2025-2026 season, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. However, McDaniel has a 30-30 overall record as the team’s head man and is off to the worst start of his career at 2-7.

Players the Dolphins reportedly received trade calls on but were unwilling to deal in recent weeks include wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, linebackers Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb and Matthew Judon, and cornerback Rasul Douglas, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero confirmed.

With a 2-7 record and a new interim general manager in place, teams are expected to check back in on Friday.
