MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins on Friday hired Green Bay Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan as their new general manager.
Sullivan has been with the Packers since 2003, when he began as a scouting intern. He has served as Green Bay’s vice president of player personnel since 2022, working closely with general manager Brian Gutekunst.
Sullivan is the son of Jerry Sullivan, a longtime NFL and college coach who retired in 2021 after more than 40 years in coaching. Jerry Sullivan previously served as the Dolphins’ wide receivers coach in 2004 — the same franchise his son now takes over as general manager.
The hire comes one day after the Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel following four seasons and a 35-33 record with the team. Sullivan replaces former general manager Chris Grier, who was dismissed in late October.
Sullivan’s immediate task will be helping Miami end the longest active playoff win drought in the NFL. The Dolphins have not won a postseason game since the 2000 season.
The Dolphins, who finished 7-10 in 2025, have several major decisions ahead, including the potential release of Tagovailoa and star wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Tagovailoa is owed $54 million guaranteed in 2026, while a post-June 1 release of Hill would save the team around $30 million in cap space, according to The Sporting News.
Meanwhile, Tagovailoa spoke publicly about his future Monday, suggesting he would be open to a fresh start even if it’s on another team.
“That would be dope,” Tagovailoa said. “I would be good with it.”
Sullivan could turn his attention to Packers quarterback Malik Willis, who is set to become a free agent this offseason.
Willis didn’t pan out immediately in the NFL after being drafted in the third round by the Tennessee Titans in 2022, but the Packers acquired him in a trade for just a seventh round pick.
Under Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, Willis has grown. His running has remained dangerous, but he has also improved his accuracy and game processing, making him an all-around threat.
His dual-threat ability could intrigue the Dolphins’ new general manager and potentially land him a new home in South Florida.
