MIAMI — Sitting nine games out of first place in the National League East and seven games back of the final Wild Card spot in the National League, with 55 games remaining in the regular season, the Miami Marlins traded outfielder Jesús Sánchez to the Houston Astros in exchange for right-handed pitcher Ryan Gusto and two prospects — infielder Chase Jaworsky and outfielder Esmil Valencia, league sources confirmed Thursday.

Sánchez, 27, spent six seasons in Miami, hitting 69 home runs and driving in 226 runs.

In his final game with the club on Wednesday – a 2–0 Marlins victory over the St. Louis Cardinals – Sánchez went 2-for-4, driving in both runs with a two-run home run.

Gusto, 26, is 7-4 with a 4.92 ERA in 24 games, including 14 starts, in his first season with the Astros.

Gusto’s previous start – a dominant 9-1 win against the Washington Nationals on July 30 – saw him pitch six innings of one-run ball.

Having undergone Tommy John surgery in 2021, Gusto earned the final spot in the Astros’ bullpen this past spring.

Jaworsky, 20, is batting .242 with three home runs and 29 RBIs for High-A Asheville in North Carolina.

Valencia, 19, is hitting .263 with five home runs and 36 RBIs for Class-A Fayetteville (North Carolina).

There were many talks involving Marlins right-handers Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera, but in the end, the club decided to retain the duo.

The Marlins open a six-game homestand on Friday evening at 7:10 p.m. ET at loanDepot park, hosting the New York Yankees.
