MIAMI — Having not allowed a run in his last two starts, Marlins right-handed pitcher Sandy Alcantara sent the first nine Houston Astros hitters he faced back to the dugout.
The fourth inning, however, was all Houston, as the Astros unleashed a five-run barrage to take the series opener, 8-2, on Monday evening at loanDepot park, snapping the Marlins’ five-game winning streak.
Former Marlins outfielder Jesús Sánchez – who was traded to the Astros on the final day of the Trade Deadline – doubled home Jeremy Peña, who led off the fourth with a double.
The Marlins honored Sánchez with a special video tribute, and he emerged from the dugout to thank the fans for their support.
Coming off their first ever sweep against the New York Yankees and hoping to reach a game over .500 for the first time since April 13, the Marlins were shut out in the first six innings.
Astros right-hander Jason Alexander threw six scoreless innings, allowing no walks and striking out seven.
The Marlins loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Otto Lopez grounded out sharply to second, ending the scoring threat.
Javier Sanoja and Derek Hill recorded pinch-hit home runs to begin the bottom of the seventh.
The series continues on Tuesday evening at 6:40 p.m. ET.
